ROOKIE STORY: Cover album for 'Calle 13'

How my rookie design disaster didn't mess-up my friend's music career

My dear college friend, René, was studying animation at SCAD while we both pursued our degrees as creatives. As an animator, René loved studying the human body in detail. He could sculpt human torsos made out of clay with lots of details on muscle tissue and bone structure. He enjoyed boxing matches, baseball, and film. I knew he liked music, could sing in a quiet rhythmic voice, and learned about a few great bands while living in the same house around the summer of 2003. I loved meeting and spending time with his girlfriend at the time; we shared the same first name. René took us to the gym every day. He was pretty religious about working out, and I had no idea how much of a positive impact that had on me in the future. He taught me to lift weights, and we made pretty healthy meals at home. He ate slowly, shared his fears with me, and really motivated me to get focused and driven about my artwork. René had the most amazing self-discipline and work ethic I've ever seen. He would go to the library and pull all nighters to finish his work. He would show me the most amazing films, and we would have movie nights with friends. He got me interested in my Cuban roots and shared the film 'Soy Cuba' with me. René also helped me land my first job. He connected me with his uncle Ulisses, who worked at an advertising agency. Ulisses interviewed me and asked me to bring a copywriter that would have chemistry with me. I had just finished a project with my new colleague Dyanis and I brought her in for an interview. She knew them as well and it was a match made in heaven. They gave us the job and assigned us the Medalla beer account. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was getting the hang of it, I think... Dyanis and I still collaborate, it was meant to be.

During that time, René called me to ask if I could help him get a printed booklet and a cover for his band's new CD album he was about to make with Sony Music. He had been traveling to Spain and won film awards for a film he produced while we were in school. At that point, I had not heard from him in a long time. I had no idea his interest in music went beyond his animation and film skills! He had conceptualized the photography shoot inspired by David Lachapelle and worked closely with some friends to come up with assets for the CD album. At the time, InDesign was becoming the new Quark as the industry's leader for editorial design - but after spending some time designing the booklet in InDesign - Sony required us to translate our design into Quark. All of the specs were different, and I got really overwhelmed. I was working full-time as a rookie creative, where the long hours were real. Another problem I encountered was that I didn't own a commercial copy of Quark, so I had no idea how I was going to pull this off. René moved mountains to get me the software, and we were able to export all the spreads from InDesign and paste them into Quark. The specs did not translate well, and some of the bleed settings got messed up. Sony needed the artwork as soon as possible, and we had to expedite a CD with the new files in no time. I was so upset!

Shortly after that, the next thing I knew was that René's band, the now notorious 'Calle 13,' was blasting through the radio, TV, everywhere. To this day, almost 20 years later, I have not had a chance to have a real catch-up with René. I left the advertising agency to work at El Nuevo Día, and I was lucky enough to see him in the newsroom from time to time. I art-directed a photoshoot for the newsroom with him and stayed in touch through the years. René and I have had some serious disagreements that I will choose not to share , but we've gone over these problems and appreciate each other's differences. After so many years and seeing 'Residente- Ron en el Piso' video come to life, I coincidentally retrospect on this CD cover we once did together. Sometimes you are your own worst critic; the cropped lyrics didn't make a difference in the level of success René has reached, and I am so relieved.

Cómo mi desastre de diseño novato no arruinó la carrera musical de mi amigo

Mi querido amigo de la universidad, René, estaba estudiando animación en SCAD mientras yo estudiaba diseño gráfico. Como animador, a René le encantaba estudiar el cuerpo humano en detalle. Podía esculpir torsos humanos de arcilla con muchos detalles en tejido muscular y estructura ósea. Disfrutaba de peleas de boxeo, béisbol y cine. Yo sabía que le gustaba la música, podía cantar con una voz rítmica y tranquila, y conocí algunas bandas geniales mientras vivíamos en la misma casa alrededor del verano de 2003. Me encantaba conocer y pasar tiempo con su novia en ese momento; compartimos el mismo nombre. René iba al gimnasio todos los días y nos llevaba con él. Era bastante religioso con hacer ejercicio, y no tenía idea de cuánto impacto positivo esto tendría en mi futuro. Me enseñó a levantar pesas, y preparábamos comidas bastante saludables en casa. Comía lentamente, compartía sus miedos conmigo, y realmente me motivaba a enfocarme y dedicarme a mi arte. René tenía la disciplina y ética laboral más asombrosas que haya visto. Iba a la biblioteca y pasaba noches enteras trabajando en sus proyectos. Me mostraba las películas más increíbles, y teníamos noches de cine con amigos. Despertó mi interés en mis raíces cubanas y compartió la película 'Soy Cuba' conmigo. René también me ayudó a conseguir mi primer trabajo después de la graduación. Conecté con su tío Ulisses, que trabajaba en una agencia de publicidad. Ulisses me entrevistó y me pidió que llevara a una 'copywriter' con la que tuviera química. Acababa de terminar un proyecto con mi nueva colega Dyanis, así que la llevé a esta entrevista. Ella también los conocía, y fue un match perfecto. Nos dieron el trabajo y nos asignaron la cuenta de la cerveza Medalla. No tenía idea de lo que estaba haciendo, pero le estaba tomando 'cogiendo el truco'. Eso creía... Dyanis y yo seguimos colaborando, estábamos destinadas a eso.

Un poco después, René me llamó para pedirme ayuda con un folleto impreso y una portada para el nuevo álbum de CD de su banda que estaba a punto de hacer con Sony Music. Había estado viajando a España y había ganado un premio cinematográfico por una película que produjo mientras estábamos en la escuela. No había tenido noticias de él en mucho tiempo. ¡No tenía idea de que su interés en la música iba más allá de sus habilidades en animación y cine! Para este álbum, había conceptualizado la sesión de fotografía inspirada en David Lachapelle y trabajó de cerca con algunos amigos para crear activos para el álbum de CD. En ese momento, InDesign se estaba convirtiendo en el nuevo Quark como líder de la industria en diseño editorial, pero después de pasar algún tiempo diseñando el folleto en InDesign, Sony nos exigió que tradujéramos nuestro diseño a Quark. Todas las especificaciones eran diferentes, y me sentí realmente abrumado. Trabajaba a tiempo completo como creativo novato, donde las largas horas eran reales. Otro problema que encontré fue que no tenía una copia comercial de Quark, así que no tenía idea de cómo iba a hacer esto. Sony necesitaba el arte lo antes posible, y tuvimos que enviar el CD con los nuevos archivos en poco tiempo. ¡Estaba tan frustrada cuando lo vi!

Poco después, lo siguiente que supe fue que la banda de René, la ahora famosa 'Calle 13', resonaba en la radio, la televisión, en todas partes. Hasta el día de hoy, casi 20 años después, no he tenido la oportunidad de tener un verdadero 'catch-up' con René. Dejé la agencia de publicidad para trabajar en El Nuevo Día, y tuve la suerte de verlo en la sala de redacción de vez en cuando. Dirigí una sesión de fotos para la sala de redacción con él y mantenemos contacto de vez en cuando. René y yo hemos tenido algunas diferencias que no compartiré, pero hemos intercambiado mensajes y apreciamos las diferencias de opinión. Después de tantos años y al ver el video 'Residente- Ron en el Piso' cobrar vida en las redes sociales, reflexiono sobre esta portada de CD que hicimos juntos. A veces puedes ser tu peor crítico; las líricas 'cropiadas' no marcaron la diferencia en el nivel de éxito que René ha alcanzado. Me siento muy aliviada.
